How can I use the beginning of a word and the picture to help me when I read?

  • Look at the beginning letter(s) and get my mouth ready/ start the word.
  • Check the picture.
  • Say a word that starts with the correct sound and makes sense.

How can I use rereading and the beginning sound(s) of a word to help me when I read?

  • Go back to the beginning of the sentence and read it again.
  • Start the tricky word and say a word that makes sense.
  • Make sure the word looks right.

How can I use chunks of a word to help me when I read?

  • Look for a chunk I know.
  • Get my mouth ready/ start the word, and read the chunk to finish it.

How can I blend letter sounds and chunks to help me when I read?

  • Put my finger under the beginning of the word.
  • Slide my finger and blend the letter sounds and chunks together.
  • Say the whole word.

How can I use the whole sentence to help me when I read?

  • Read up to the tricky word and then read the rest of the sentence.
  • Think about the sentence or story.          
  • Go back to the beginning of the sentence and read up to the tricky word.
  • Say a word that looks right and makes sense.
