Peanut Allergy Information

Dear Parents,

Here at Nye Elementary School we have a number of students with health risks specific to allergies to food items. These allergies include milk, various fresh fruits, red dye, wheat, shellfish and eggs. In several grade levels, we have students with a peanut/tree nut allergy. These allergies are very serious and in some instances, potentially life-threatening.

It is critically important that we ensure the safety of all students while they are here at school, and for these students that includes making sure that they do not come into contact with or ingest products that contain the food items to which they are allergic. The most difficult time to do this is during our celebrations, class parties and other events in which food comes into school from the outside, including snack time and lunch. Due to the concern for the safety of these students, our classrooms must remain peanut/tree nut free.

What this will mean for our classrooms is that:

  • All foods (cupcakes, cookies, cake, potato chips, pretzels, candy, etc.) must be sent into school in the package in which it was purchased with the ingredient label intact.  This includes items sent in for snack.
  • For birthday treats, please consider a non-food item such as stickers, pencils, a small coloring activity, gel bracelets, etc. instead of sending in an edible treat. There are a lot of options out there at a comparable cost to food items.
  • If an edible birthday treat is the chosen option, it must be peanut / tree nut free, and must be guaranteed to be free of cross-contamination. Please refer to the Acceptable Treats list for reference. Items brought to school that do not meet these requirements cannot be accepted and must be sent home.
  • Home-made items like cupcakes, cookies, etc. cannot be accepted. If these items are sent in for snack, the student will be asked to put it back in their backpack and will not be able to eat it in the classroom during snack time.
  • No peanut or tree nut products or peanut butter sandwiches will be allowed in classrooms.
  • Drinks must be in their original container, and should not contain red dye.

We will continue to have a table in the cafeteria that will be designated as peanut/tree nut free. We will ensure that all meals eaten at this table are peanut/tree nut free.

Thank you in advance for doing your part to help us maintain a safe environment for all children at Nye Elementary School. If you have any questions or concerns please call 717-566-0300. Thank you again for your help.
